Sheriff's Office Investigated for Allegedly Violating Illegal Aliens' Civil Rights

An Arizona sherriff's office is under investigation after activists alleged it violated the civil rights of illegal immigrants.

The Department of Justice began investigating the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office at the request of Congressmen John Conyers (D-Mich.), Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), and Robert Scott (D-Va.), as well as activist groups such as National Day Laborer Organizer Network and ACORN, according to CNSNews.com.

Amid the start of a massive federal program aimed at stemming the housing crisis, lenders began foreclosure proceedings on a record number of Santa Clara County homeowners last month.

A total of 1,465 "notices of default" — the first step in the foreclosure process — were filed by lenders in the county, up 60 percent from January, and up 32 percent from a year earlier, according to information firm ForeclosureRadar, which reported the data Wednesday.

The Justice Department announced on Tuesday it is opening an investigation on Sheriff Joe Arpaio over accusations of civil rights violations.

In a letter sent from justice officials to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Loretta King, the acting assistant attorney general wrote, "our investigation will focus on alleged patterns of discriminatory police practices and unconstitutional searches and seizures conducted by the MCSO."

Zoe Lofgren and Mike Honda have decided that the national budget should include $237,500 to expand the Japanese-American museum. Their response to Sen. John McCain's objection to this expenditure during very tough financial times is to threaten him for speaking up.

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain, all atwitter over alleged "pork" in a budget bill, zapped a San Jose target Friday: the Japanese-American Museum in Japantown.

McCain, formerly famous for his inability to use a computer, is now using Twitter to single out projects he deems unworthy of funding in a $410 billion bill in the Senate — including $237,500 for expansion of the Japantown museum.
